Over the holiday weekend, the Yankees have continued to find a way to win in spite of marginal starting pitching performances.
Yesterday behind Chien-Ming Wang, the Yankees were able to win in 12 innings off a Jorge Posada single scoring home A-Rod from second base to beat Roy Halladay and the Jays.
Today behind homers by Hideki Matsui (three-run homer), Derek Jeter (two-run homer) and some clutch hitting by Jorge Posada, who was batting cleanup in place of a resting A-Rod (smart move there, Girardi), the Yankees totaled 14 hits and 10 runs in defeating the Jays 10-8 to win their fifth straight against their AL East rivals.
The Yanks remain one game behind the AL East-leading Red Sox. Which is pretty good, in my opinion, considering the discussion I had with a colleague who is impressed at the Yankees’ current winning streak in spite of shoddy starting pitching. I told him — it’s all about the offense.
