I first read this from Jason at Heartland Pinstripes then confirmed it with PeteAbe and ESPN.
The Yankees have offered the biggest contract in baseball history for a pitcher. 6 years for $140 million for one CC Sabathia.
I’m not even surprised. I had expected this from the Yankees. Yesterday’s trade just reaffirmed my suspicions that the Yankees would go after starting pitching during the Hot Stove League.
Look at it this way, with Posada, Matsui, A-Rod, Jeter all missing time due to injuries last season, the Yankees narrowly missed the playoffs. The offense is FINE. Do not tamper with the offense. Sure, we lost Abreu and Giambi, but we can get that back with a healthy lineup and possibly an additional bat or two through free agency. The biggest minus last year was the pitching rotation. Now that we’ve probably lost Mussina and maybe Pettitte, we need to replace them with quality pitching. Phil Hughes is still too young, and Ian Kennedy is still unpredictable, so adding a minimum of two starting pitchers will go a long way for the Yankees and offer them a rotation to match Boston and Tampa Bay.
So with the 6/$140 offer today, the Yankees showed the rest of baseball they mean business. Serious business.
