Like they did in 1923, the Yankees won their Opening Day Night game, their final at the current Yankee Stadium.
They played smart baseball in defeating division rival Toronto, 3-2. Capped by Melky Cabrera’s home run in the 6th inning was the sweet spot in the victory.
Wang, one day removed from his birthday was sensational. He went 7 strong innings, while Joba pitched a good 8th, with two strikeouts and making Frank Thomas quiver in fear. Mo was his typical self, needing only 12 pitches to close out the save and give Joe Girardi his first game ball as a manager.
Games like this (and much more) makes me wish I lived near the NYC area. I’ll just have to push myself to see the Yankees when they come to Baltimore and Washington and make the occasional trip to NYC (like I will in May and July).
Go Yankees!
(Disclaimer: I do not intend to blog about EVERY game this season. I’ll leave that to other bloggers and the beat writers. This blog will provide links to bloggers I think are doing a great job offering game analysis and other pertinent information that I feel can be shared with my readers. If you want a game by game analysis, check out beat writer Pete Abraham in my Beat Writers list on the left.)
